Cosmetic Dentistry

If a dentist doesn’t advertise vigorously as a cosmetic dentist, he is only a mediocre dentist.

True or False?

For the past two decades, there has been a ubiquitous explosion of a type of dentistry called “cosmetic dentistry”. The word “dentist” by itself is hardly used or heard of anymore. It seems like the word “cosmetic” has overshadowed dentistry entirely. In an evolving world where people are more concern about aesthetics than personal health, many patients are misled into believing that a cosmetic procedure must be performed in order to make them more socially appealing. Some patients have even requested to have cosmetic work done on them without regards to the detrimental effects on their health.

While Dr. Suen does routinely perform cosmetic procedures, he will always inform patients of the tradeoffs for each procedure so that the patient can make the best choice possible. For example, Dr. Suen will only offer patients the option of replacing silver fillings with tooth color fillings only when a silver filling needs to be replaced, not when patients simply want to improve their looks; he will always put the patient’s health first. Dr. Suen wants to ensure that his patients receive top quality, healthy dental care. He believes that cosmetic dentistry is merely an integrating part of dentistry, and it is not dentistry itself. He graduated from UCSF not to become a cosmetologist, but with the intent to help people improve their oral health. Dr. Suen will still perform cosmetic dentistry, but his priority will always be a healthy smile over the “perfect smile”.

Bleaching

A chemical process used to lighten the teeth color.

Tooth Color Fillings

After decay removal, the tooth can be filled with composite that matches the color of the tooth.

Porcelain Veneer

Thin pieces of porcelain are bonded onto the front side of teeth to produce an aesthetic improvement for teeth that are discolored or stained, chipped, misaligned, or worn.

Space Closure

Gaps are filled with composite material to give better and immediate cosmetic results.

Porcelain Crowns

Porcelain crown is a tooth-shaped covering that encases the original tooth or space to restore its shape, size and strength, while matching the appearance of adjacent teeth.

Porcelain Bridges

If one or more consecutive teeth are missing, a porcelain bridge can be used to fill in the gap by using the adjacent teeth for support.  This is a fixed prosthesis and can not be removed by the patient.

Cosmetic Recontouring

By lightly reshaping the shape of the tooth without the use of anesthetic, the patient achieves an improved aesthetic look in less than ten minutes. No follow-up care is necessary in the future.
